It was the under-11 and 13 State Champs last weekend. I won two silver and one gold medal in the under-11. My Flying 200m time was 15.61 - I think the Australia record is 15.17! I also did a 46.6 for my standing 500m time trial (a PB). I was just beaten by a boy named Tom Benton in both those events (I think he did a 15.31 and a 45.6 - which might be a new Aussie record?). I was pretty disappointed with my TT because when I finished I had a lot left so I should have gone harder. Any way, then I backed to beat Tom in the State Scratch Race Championship (2000m) - which was the one I really wanted! I'm 9-years-old and ride a BAUM 650c track bike. It's red and I love it. Hopefully I'll be big enough for 700c wheels next year to help me keep up with Tom.
Thanks - love the site. Please keep it going.

We live in Kansas, our closest track is Superdrome in Frisco Texas, 6 hours away.
Here is what I wrote just after 2008 Jr Track Nationals;

We returned home last night at 1:30 am from California at Road and Track Junior National Championships.

8/16 Fourth and final day of Jr Track Nationals M15-16, 30 man field.

There were two heats of 15, the top 10 go on to finals. This was a 40 lap points race where at each 10th lap is a sprint lap. He did well enough in his heat to advance to the final. I had told Josh to jump on Lawson’s wheel if he made an attack. He complied and they were able to gain up to a 3/4 lap lead on the field. They were able to garner 1st and 2nd for the first sprint lap. Lawson started to lay it down, Josh elected not to burn him self up trying to keep up with his blazing pace, so he allowed the pack to catch him. Like the previus day, he was the only one who really would do work on the front to pull Lawson back. In the sprint laps that followed, Josh was able to gain enough points to secure the Silver medal. In doing so, also gained enough accumulative points for the week of track racing to be in the top 5 for the omnium, so he had two podium visits.

8/15 Third day of Jr Track Nationals M15-16.

There were two heats of 15, the top 10 go on to finals.

This was a 32 lap race. He raced well, and hard, took 6th in the prelim. We came back at 6 pm to race again. This was the most stressful race that I have ever watched him race. There were several attacks made by the road TT winner (Texan) Lawson Craddock. Josh pulled back each one. He was able to stretch out the field. It came down to a final sprint. It was a photo finish. He placed 5th. Other than Lawson, it was Josh Wade's name announced the most.... for having pulled back each attack of Lawson’s.

8/15 Second day of Jr Track Nationals M15-16 30 man field.

This was a 500M standing start TT. Finished 19th.

8/14 First day of Jr Track Nationals M15-16

Started off with a flying 200m time trial, he made the time cut off

He then went on to a sudden death one on one match sprint. This is a three lap sprint with tactics playing out. He attacked first, but did not see his competitor make his jump, Josh was not able to respond fast enough. Lost out. Finished 14th.

Road Nationals:

8/8 Road Race M15-16, after a crash in first lap that sent 1 to hospital with broken collar bone and trashed Josh’s bike, he got a race neutral bike, and finished 62nd. Quite a few did not finish this race.

8/7 Criterium Race M15-16, in the parking lot of Angel Stadium, after being in top 10 with 1.5 to go, a rider ahead of him clipped his peddle and crashed, Josh avoided but had to go around, he finished 33rd out of 90, several other racers Did Not Finish

8/6, Individual Time Trial, M15-16, 74th out of 90 again, he hates time trials and wanted to conserve for crit.

Sorry - I accidentally picked a different Anderson (younger, and not from Australia!) when entering the results. It should be correct now.

The gear calculator on this site has exactly that feature. You enter the effective diameter of the wheel in the box marked "Rolling diameter".

The best way to get the diameter is to roll the wheel one full circle on the ground and measure how far it travels. Divide that by Pi (3.1416 will do) to get diameter. If accuracy is important, use the same tire and air pressure the rider will race with.
