A recent comment alerted me to the Nicole Reinhart Junior Cycling Classic results online. As usual, I have extracted the individual timed results and added them to the JuniorVelo database.
The USA and Canada riders seem to have a long way to go this year, if times are any indication. In the pursuit, for example, 68 current juniors around the world have posted faster 3000m pursuit times than our best guy. Pretty much the same for the women, where 32 riders are ahead of our best.
Of course there are riders in both the USA and the rest of the world capable of faster rides than the database shows for them. As always, projecting the future from past numbers is a bit of a guessing game.
Last Sunday was the first day that the Bay Area’s juniors got to ride on their newly remodeled track. When the Santa Clara County closed down the Hellyer Park Velodrome earlier this year, many track regulars like me were upset. But good news! Even though track refurbishment is not complete, it has now been reopened for riding on the weekends.

Nick J. on new cement
There were not as many people as usual, which surprised me, for the track reopening. There were three coaches today, Mr. Jensen, Mr. Kubacki, and Mr. Bohl. Only 10 riders showed up, 4 of which were new to the track, but experienced cyclists. I think that there were less people because of the earlier NCNCA Road Championships.

Warming Up
Coach Jensen said that special priority was being given to the juniors. Instead of having the normal twice a month sessions they would be attempting to have sessions every Sunday, in order to get ready for the State Track Championship on June 16. Updates on session times are at www.ridethetrack.com

Coach Glenn gives instruction
Some warm up cycling and basic instruction was done. Then Joel Shaffer showed the younger and newer riders the right technique as he rode around a 40 second 500M. Everyone appeared to be having a good time. The new apron, warm up circle, and pad look great, I can’t wait to be riding on it again.

Me
It’s official -the Junior State Track Championship for Northern California/Northern Nevada will be held June 16th at Hellyer Park Velodrome. Here’s the official announcement.
Online registration is at https://www.sportsbaseonline.com/Item.aspx?item_id=1744
Once the track renovations are complete, there may be extra practice times for the juniors, who will have only a short time to tune up their track skills before the event. Watch ridethetrack.com or the mailing lists for details.
p.s. Yes, this is what we used to call “Districts”.
Better late than never?
I have just added results from the New Zealand championships held this March. Thanks to cyclingnz.com for the data, and cyclingnews.com for having one number that was missing at cyclingnz. I’ll take credit for shaving two seconds off Pieter Bulling’s 500 meter time - otherwise it appears that he was slower than the second and third place riders.
Great times showing up - New Zealand must be doing something right.
Thanks to Stephanie McKenzie for the not-so-gentle encouragement to get this data in place :).
