Just a reminder - Northern California/Nevada Junior District Championships are this Friday!
Some notes:
- The promoter has now posted the race announcement. Please read it carefully for details.
- There will be a 10-12 Women’s Omnium, and not a 17-18 Women’s omnium. There’s an error in the announcement.
- Get your pre-registrations in now. The price doubles if you register on race day!
We have a lot of new young riders this year, and many of them have a reasonable chance at a medal if they enter this race. I hope to see a good crowd in spite of the late hours and holiday weekend.
p.s. I have nothing to do with putting on this event. I’m only involved as someone who wants to see the new riders have a good first experience in competition and as a parent of an older junior.
I just came across a source of funding for juniors. It’s not for everyone, but I’m sure there are eligible riders out there who have missed out only because they didn’t know to apply.
Please see the links for exact details, but the general idea is that you can apply for funding to travel to specific camps and important events. There is an income requirement and you must have some proven level of performance and potential. Still, if you are qualified to attend some of the camps or other events for which these awards are available, don’t miss out.
You can start at the USA Cycling Development Foundation home page and then look for the Edmund R. Burke Fund on the programs page, or just go direct to the application form.
Don’t need the money? Maybe you’d like to donate.
Thanks to a schedule conflict, we combined today’s junior session with the roughly-monthly sprint tournament series at Hellyer. We had a small group of juniors from the 10-12 age group who rode the 200m timings and then did several 3-up match sprints and a chariot race interspersed with the adult races. The three riders were close enough in ability that it was good competition, and I think they learned from watching the adult sprinters as well.

Andrew and Mylo warm up for a sprint heat.

Steve Ryan’s post on Jan 25, 2005, describes the procedure for determining chaingear ratio.
In case you haven’t noticed, there is more and better information available on the USACycling site than there was a few months ago. Go there for information about the schedule, lodging, and more.

You may also want to visit the LeHigh Valley Velodrome site. Their calendar doesn’t reflect the morning race sessions during nationals, but I’m sure they haven’t forgotten.
A reminder to those traveling to the event: Sunday is scheduled as a rain day, and the East Coast weather means that Sunday racing is a real possibility. Consider flexible travel plans or a Monday departure for home.
p.s. I took the image from USA Cycling without permission - I hope they won’t mind since I’m only using it to promote their site and event.
