Wednesday at Hellyer

Filed under: Hellyer — Administrator @ 11:18 pm

Another junior takes his first shot at Wednesday night racing. (Okay, I didn’t take any pictures, the image is from a crit earlier this year). He got 5th in the C group (12 riders, mostly adult men) as well as 2nd to his older sister in the women and juniors group. Not bad for a 10-12 rider.

Four juniors rode tonight, Daniel Tisdell, Dawn, Taylor, and Jim. Daniel H is in L.A. training for Worlds, Matt is travelling, and the LaFleurs are preparing for road nationals.

Site FAQ

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 1:05 am

Q: What is this site?
A: A place for almost anything specific to Junior track cycling.

Q: Who runs it?
A: Steve Ryan. It’s something I do for fun, not as a business. I’ll probably keep doing it as long as my son is a junior (1 more year).

Q: Can I be notified when new items are posted?
A1: There is no email notification, but there is a better way. This site has an RSS feed, which allows software to automatically check for updates and tell you what they are. This can be done with software on your computer or through a web site, usually at no cost. Search for “RSS readers” or “RSS aggregators”. I use the bloglines site, but your preferences may differ.
A2: If you use My Yahoo!, you can add an RSS module to your page. It will initially have a search box to help you find RSS feeds to add. If you enter “junior track cycling” in the box, this site should be the first one found. (Thanks Garrett - I hadn’t noticed this new Yahoo feature.)
A3: Here are some buttons which allow you to add this site instantly, if you are a user of Bloglines or My Yahoo! More to come as I learn about them.

Q: Why don’t you cover [Australian events, Major Taylor Velodrome, my team as well as your team, etc.]?
A: Because you haven’t sent me any information. I’m just one person. If you have an item to post, email me. If you would like to post frequently we can set something up so you can post directly, as long as your posts aren’t too commercial and are in good taste for all (imagine a 10-year-old girl with her mother looking over her shoulder).

Q: Are you going to cover major event X?
A: If it’s close to home or my son is riding there, yes. If all I have is information from the net, no. Not good enough? If you’ll collect the information I’ll be glad to post it. If that’s too much trouble, you could try sending me some airline tickets and hotel money.

Q: How can I contact you?
A: The easiest way is to comment on a post. I preview every comment, so I’ll see it. You can write “don’t post this” if the message is just for me and it won’t be seen by others.

Q: Why doesn’t my comment appear immediately?
A: I don’t want any inappropriate postings here, so I preview each comment. Unfortunately this means that if I’m not online when you post there may be a substantial delay. I’m just being careful here - so far I have not censored a single post. Correction, October 28, 2004: this site is now attracting “comment spammers”. It’s just like email spam, except it would appear on this web site if I didn’t censor it.

Q: I was told about an article, but I don’t see it.
A1: Try the archive links on the right side of the page. They will show you a month of posts at a time.
A2: Select a category under the categories header. This will show only posts relevant to that category.
A3: Use the search box. Please remember that I sometimes omit or don’t know a first or last name - keep trying.

Q: Can I use the pictures on my site/racing resume/et cetera?
A: All images are copyright Steve Ryan, in the year posted, unless otherwise noted. You can’t use any of them without permission. That said, if you ask and explain the use, I’ll probably give permission. Full resolution originals are usually available.

Q: Will you link to my site or blog?
A: Send me a link and I’ll check it out.

Q:What happens in 2007, when your son is no longer a junior?
A:One of two things. Ideally, another parent or coach will come along who wants to take over the site and keep it going with the same goals. Failing that, I’ll probably still maintain it, but the quality will inevitably drop.

Q: Did you write this FAQ because you get too many questions?
A: Actually, no. It’s because I want people to be able to find this information easily. If you have a question or request not addressed here, please ask.

Hellyer Wednesday Night

Filed under: Hellyer — Administrator @ 9:52 am

A slow night for the track, with the smallest turnout I’ve seen this year. One junior highlight - Dawn Tisdell came to race. She is an active road rider and has trained many times at the track, but I can’t recall her racing here before. Below she is seen with cousin Emily, who did a little track racing in 2002.

A Good Night for Juniors at Hellyer

Filed under: Hellyer — Administrator @ 6:27 pm

Juniors returning from Nationals had a good night at Hellyer last Friday, July 9.

Daniel Holloway was 3rd in the District Keirin Championship, first in the men’s omnium, 2nd in the one mile scratch race, 2nd in the miss and out, and first in the Madison (with Walker Starr).

Kim LaFleur was first in the district keirin championship, first in the women’s omnium, first in the miss and out, and second in the 2 mile scratch race. Sisters Kelly and Michelle raced as well, with results which don’t look impressive - until you realize that they are 13-14 and the rest of the competitors were adult women.

Full results are on the official site.

Note to non-local fans: This night at Hellyer is known as the Burbank Memorial Omnium. It’s a combination of mostly nonstandard races with a long history as an annual event. This year the Northern California/Nevada district keirin championship was held on the same night.

How to Use This Site

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 7:51 am

I have run into a few people now who have had trouble finding what they want. Here are some pointers.

  1. Older articles get moved to “archives” after a while. Use the calender or the monthly links under “archives:” on the right side of the page to find that material.
  2. You can also search. The search box on the right column searches just this site, not the whole web. Of course if you are looking for a picture of a rider and I didn’t type the name, the search won’t find it.
  3. Try the links under “categories:”. These filter the site to contain just material about certain events or subjects. As I get material about more topics (for example other velodromes) I’ll add more categories.
  4. If you click an image, it simply links to a larger version in the same brower window. You need to use the browser button to go back.
  5. Make suggestions! I’m just one guy doing this for fun. I can’t think of everything, but I’ll take suggestions when I can.
